A Journey from Science Labs to Mudy Fields

2017

Open-Source AgriBot Platfrom

This project aims to develop a robotic platform for autonomous localization and navigation in agricultural fields. Designed to be lightweight, transportable, and large enough to pass over crop rows, the robot also allows space for attachments like herbicide nozzles or cameras. Development involves three main phases: designing the hardware, enabling precise localization, and implementing autonomous navigation. Initially joystick-controlled, the robot ultimately navigates autonomously, following field trajectories based on sensor-driven localization and mapping.

Innovations in Navigation

We have developed a novel robot navigation framework for row-crop fields using visual-servoing technology. This system processes images from two on-board cameras to leverage the structured crop rows, guiding the robot’s movement accurately without needing explicit localization or mapping. The framework enables precise row-following and smooth transitions between rows, optimizing navigation in agricultural environments.

2020

Birth of BonnBot!

Throughout 4 years advanced robotic platforms with specific annovel capabilities were developed to convert the collected data into robotic actions in the fields and exploit digital avatars. Precise robotic weeding, for example, seeks to intervene in a minimally invasive way, reducing the amount of inputs such as herbicides. This project develops autonomous field aerial and ground robots that detect and identify individual plants, weed mapping the field to treat individual plants with the most appropriate intervention. The robots precisely apply nitrogen fertilizer enabled by digital avatars that predict the plant nutrient demand and probable losses in the field.

2023

Start of DynamoBot

In late 2023, inspired by BonnBot and PhenoRob research, we created DynamoBot—a precision farming tool that uses robotics, AI, and computer vision to manage weeds with mechanical, chemical, and electrical methods simultaneously. This flexible system, easily attachable to tractors or autonomous robots, enables targeted, biodiversity-friendly weed control for all types of farming.

MVP Tests and Finalization

In 2025, we’ll finalize and test DynamoBot#1 with early partner farmers who have provided Letters of Intent, ensuring the MVP is optimized for real-world farming. These trials will allow us to validate performance, gather critical feedback, and refine our Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model before a full rollout. This collaboration with early adopters will help us demonstrate DynamoBot#1’s economic and environmental benefits, paving the way for a successful launch in 2026.

2025 …
